How to Gift a Kindle Book

Amazon lets you send digital books to any email address in a few steps.

Updated October 1, 2026 · 6 min read

You can buy a digital title for another reader on Amazon by selecting the Buy for others option directly on the eBook product page. At ReadNext, we build reading guides for people choosing books for friends and family, and the Amazon gifting page handles the whole order. Anyone learning how to gift a Kindle book needs only the recipient’s email address and a preferred delivery date to complete the checkout.

The recipient does not need to own a dedicated Kindle e-reader to open the gift. They can read it on any Kindle e-reader or in the free Kindle app on a phone or tablet. Specific rules govern international deliveries, redemptions, and refunds, so knowing the boundaries in advance prevents surprises later.

How to Gift a Kindle Book in Five Steps

Purchasing a digital title for someone else takes five specific actions on the Amazon website. Start by opening the product page for the eBook you want to send. Look below the standard purchase box to find the separate Buy for others section.

Once you confirm the order, Amazon processes the payment and queues the delivery. The recipient receives an email notification on the date you selected, containing your note and a direct button to claim the book.

Amazon help documentation outlines the exact checkout sequence for digital gifting:

  • Go to the eBook product page on Amazon and locate the Buy for others box.
  • Choose your quantity and select the Buy for others button to begin checkout.
  • Enter the recipient’s email address in the provided delivery field.
  • Select the date you want the recipient to receive the gift email.
  • Add an optional gift message with your name, then select Place your order.

Managing Unsent Copies and Buying in Bulk

You can purchase multiple copies of the same digital title in a single order (Amazon’s help page explains how). This works well for book clubs, corporate teams, or classroom reading assignments. Enter the required number in the quantity box before clicking the purchase button.

If you skip entering recipient email addresses during checkout, Amazon emails management instructions to your account address. Any copies you leave unassigned remain available in your account so you can distribute them later.

To deliver an unassigned copy at a later time, go to Your Orders and select Manage eBooks. Click the Copy link with instructions button next to the title, then paste that redemption link directly into a personal message. Keep in mind that Amazon terms state Kindle books and redemption links cannot be resold.

How the Recipient Accesses and Redeems the eBook

The recipient claims their digital book through an email sent directly by Amazon on the scheduled date. The notification displays your gift message and a prompt to start the download.

The title connects to their digital library immediately after confirmation. They can read it on any Kindle e-reader or in the free Kindle app on a phone or tablet. A hardware Kindle device is never required to enjoy the gift.

The redemption process requires only three quick actions:

  • Open the gift email from Amazon and select Redeem your gift.
  • Select Redeem now on the landing page that opens in the browser.
  • Sign in to an Amazon account and choose the preferred device for delivery.

Country Limits and How to Gift a Kindle Book Abroad

Amazon enforces strict geographic boundaries on digital literature deliveries. According to official customer service policies, Kindle eBooks can only be redeemed by recipients in your same country. Recipients outside your country cannot redeem any Kindle eBooks sent to them.

Amazon says the limit comes from copyright restrictions that govern digital publishing rights in different territories. If an international friend tries to claim an eBook sent from your domestic store, the system blocks the download.

The Amazon redemption help page notes that recipients in another country may be offered an exchange for an Amazon.com Gift Card during redemption. To avoid that, send a gift card bought from the Amazon store in the recipient’s own country.

Amazon Refund Rules for Digital Book Gifts

A buyer can request a refund for unredeemed digital book gifts within 60 days of purchase. If your recipient decides not to read the title or leaves the link untouched, you can recover the purchase cost through your account settings.

To start the process, open Your Orders on Amazon and click the option labeled Return unredeemed books. According to the Amazon return terms, Amazon will not refund a copy that has already been delivered to or redeemed by the recipient.

Approved refunds return to the original payment method used during checkout. The funds usually appear on your statement within 3 to 5 business days after processing.

Who Digital Gifting Fits and When Physical Wins

Sending a digital title suits readers who travel light, commute with a smartphone, or prefer adjustable text sizes. It also provides an instant solution when you need a thoughtful present delivered across town on short notice.

This option does not fit readers who collect hardcovers, enjoy turning paper pages, or read on competing hardware devices like Kobo. For those recipients, browsing Gifts for Book Lovers offers tactile alternatives that do not depend on Amazon accounts. You might explore a monthly book subscription box for ongoing deliveries, select luxury gifts for book lovers for milestone occasions, or browse unique gifts for book lovers for handcrafted literary accessories.

Our answer for overseas recipients would change if Amazon let people redeem Kindle gifts across countries. Until then, mail a physical book.

How to Gift a Kindle Book That Fits the Reader

Matching the right title to the recipient requires looking at their current reading habits before buying. Check which genres they pick up during holidays, or see if their favorite novelist recently published a companion novella.

If you feel unsure about their reading taste, use our book gift finder to explore targeted recommendations by theme. You can also send them through our What should I read quiz to discover what matches their preferred reading speed and style.

Verify your recipient’s home country on Amazon, pick an unread title from their preferred genre, and follow the steps above to gift the Kindle book today.

Can I gift a Kindle book to someone living in another country?

Can I send the redemption link myself instead of using Amazon email?

Yes. If you leave the recipient email field empty at checkout, go to Your Orders on Amazon and open Manage eBooks. Select Copy link with instructions, then paste the redemption link into a personal email or text message. Kindle redemption links cannot be resold.

What happens if I type the wrong email address during checkout?
